在古罗马的骑术表演中，骑师常常同时骑两匹以上的马，从一马背上跃至另一马背上，拉丁语把这种骑师称作desultor，意思是“跳跃者”，等于英语单词leaper。后来该词又被用来比喻反复无常的人或说话无条理的人。英语desultory一词即源于此，表示不连贯的，无条理的。
