词源词根法
日元最终来自汉语圆，瘾来自广东话烟瘾，鸦片瘾。清朝末年，外国商人因鸦片有利可图把大量鸦片运进中国毒害中国人，许多中国人吸鸦片成瘾，19世纪中期进入美国的华工中也不乏有烟瘾的人。yen一词就是汉语“烟瘾”（yenyin）中“瘾”（yin）字的讹用，20世纪初始用于美国英语。美国人很可能原想以“烟瘾”喻指“渴望”或“嗜好”，但却取错了字，把中国人的“瘾头”变成了英语中的“烟头”了。另有一种解释认为，yen系由yearn（渴望）或yearning（渴望）演变而来。
