在欧洲神话中有很多关于美人鱼（mermaid）的故事。传说中的美人鱼上半身是美丽的女人，下半身是披着鳞片的漂亮的鱼尾。一般认为美人鱼的生物原型是儒艮或海牛。很多人都是从安徒生的童话中认识了那个纯洁、美丽、善良的小美人鱼。今天，小美人鱼的雕像已经成为丹麦首都哥本哈根的著名旅游景点，同时也已成为丹麦的象征。早在安徒生之前，就已经有了人鱼的传说，那时侯人们心目中的美人鱼虽然同样有着超凡的美貌和魔力，但她会诱惑经过的海员而使航船触礁毁灭，人们称之为siren（塞壬、海妖）。
