来自希腊语hypokrisis，舞台表演，演戏，来自hypo-，在下，-kris，分开，筛选，评论，词源同crisis，critic.来自于古希腊时期的一种舞台表演形式，即边说边紧跟着发表看法，评论或进行阐释，引申词义表演，演戏。现义伪善，虚伪义可能来自于此，或来自hypo-，下面，欠缺，-kris，评论，观点，即不敢发表观点和看法的，掩饰真实情感的，引申词义伪善，虚伪。
