insist, persist, stick to

三者都可作“坚持”解。它们的区别在于:

1.insist常用于坚持意见、看法、主张等; persist一般用于坚持行动,偶尔用于对某种意见坚持不变; 而stick to多用于坚持原则、计划、决定、诺言、意见等。例如:

I insist on telling him how great you are.我一定要告诉他你是多么了不起。

I persisted that we should walk there.我坚持我们步行去。

Jack always sticks to his promise.杰克总是信守自己的诺言。

2.insist后接介词on+名词或动名词,也可接that从句; 而persist后接介词in〔with〕加名词或动名词构成的短语,而不接不定式。例如:

He insisted on trying again, regardless of the consequences.他不顾后果,执意要再试一试。

He persisted in saying so.他坚持这样说。

这些动词均有“坚持”之意。

insist通常用于对意见、主张等的坚持。

persist用于褒义指坚持继续做某事，但更常用于贬义，指不听劝告，顽固坚持。

persevere含褒义，强调坚持不懈的努力。

adhere与to连用，指坚持意见、计划或承诺等，含坚持不懈之意。

cling和to连用，指对信仰、意见、习惯等的坚持。

速记技巧

谐音记忆法

记忆法1：硬塞死他。硬塞给他，他“坚持”不要；

记忆法2：词根“per”是“每时每刻”的意思，“in”是“在内”。所以persist和insist都是坚持，而前者persist,per—每时每刻，sist—站，每时每刻站着，即“行为上的坚持”。

而insist,in—在里面，sist—站，重要的观点在心里面站着，即“观点上的坚持”。而resist呢，re—反复，sist—站，老师讲课的时候他反复站起来，显然是有不同的意见，所以resist的意思是“反驳”。

由此引出的是resistance是电阻（这就是物理中的“R”呀），而“water resistant”则是“防水”。
