在美国英语中这个词的首字母一般总是大写的，只能用作专有名词，指美国真空吸尘器制造商w.H.Hoover(1849-1932)创建的Hoover公司生产的真空吸尘器牌名；而在英国英语中Hoover这一牌名已被属名化，首字母已变为小写，既可用作名词，指“真空吸尘器”，又可作动词用，表示“用真空吸尘器打扫”，相当于to vacuum-clean。例如He was busy hoovering（the bedroom carpet）when I arrived home from work.（CID）（当我下班回家时他正在用真空吸尘器打扫卧室的地毯。）Hoover公司生产的第一个真空吸尘器在1908年只售70美元。真空吸尘器并非Hoover本人所发明，真正的发明者是俄亥俄一家百货店的看门人（caretaker）J.Murrary Spangler。
