ancient, old

这两个词都有“古代的”“古老的”意思。ancient指发生或存在于很久以前,现在则未必存在; old则指其存在至今的,时间已相当长。ancient所指的时间一般比old长。ancient的反义词是recent; old的反义词是young或new。

ancient，old，antique

这些形容词都含“古代的，古老的”之意。

ancient指很久以前发生或存在的事物。用于描述历史时，指远古时代。

old指长期以来一直存在着的事物，与times连用指古代，与days连用时指从前或旧社会。

antique指已经很古老或颇有古风的事物，一般都具有较高价值。

词源词根法

来自词根ante，在前面的，古老的。来源于拉丁语副词ante(前，过去)。anci（ance-）前、先前+-ent形容词词尾。大家记这个单词的关键是要知道ante是先前的，关键很多人不知道，我们也没想出好的办法解释为何ante是先前的，你还是死记。另外，ante也许和front在发音上同源，因为front是前面的，所以ante也是前面的，在先的。
